Mount Waverley: A Local History

Mount Waverley is a suburb located in the southeast of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It was named after the Waverley estate, which was situated in the area during the 19th century. The suburb covers an area of approximately 11.5 square kilometers and has a population of over 33,000 people.

Early History

The original inhabitants of the Mount Waverley area were the Wurundjeri people, who lived in the region for thousands of years prior to European settlement. In the early 1800s, European settlers started to move into the area, and by the 1860s, the land was mostly used for farming.

In 1885, the Waverley estate was established in the area by a wealthy Melbourne businessman named John Ewart. The estate covered an area of around 63 hectares and included a large homestead, stables, and other outbuildings. The estate was named after the Waverley Novels by Sir Walter Scott.

During the 20th century, Mount Waverley experienced a period of significant growth and development. In the 1920s and 1930s, many new homes were built in the area, and the Mount Waverley railway station was constructed in 1930, which made the suburb more accessible to Melbourne's CBD.

The 1950s and 1960s saw even more growth and development in the area. Many new schools were built, including Mount Waverley Primary School (1955), Mount Waverley North Primary School (1960), and Mount Waverley High School (1964). A new shopping center, the Mount Waverley Village Shopping Centre, was also constructed in 1966.

Recent History

In recent years, Mount Waverley has continued to develop and grow. The suburb has become increasingly diverse, with large numbers of migrants from China, India, and other countries settling in the area.

In 2016, the Mount Waverley railway station was upgraded as part of Victoria's Regional Rail Link project. The upgrade included a new pedestrian bridge, improved accessibility, and better bus connections to surrounding areas.
